Crimson Peak (2015)

Rated: R - Runtime: 119 min
tesg's Rating: Two and one half stars (out of four)

There's never any question a Guillermo del Toro feature is going to be visually stunning.  This is no exception.  And it starts out feeling like the script is going to match the visual level.  But once we move to the decaying house in the middle of nowhere, the script decays accordingly.

All the style we expect, not enough of the substance.

The Martian (2015)

Rated: PG-13 - Runtime: 142 min
tesg's Rating: Three stars (out of four)

This is a pretty great fluffy feel-good mainstream movie with some really well done space genre cinematography that the masses will eat up and claim to be one of the most amazing things ever filmed, even though it's not.

But that's okay.  Everyone needs to smile sometimes.  Even goth chicks.

Black Mass (2015)

Rated: R - Runtime: 122 min
tesg's Rating: Three stars (out of four)

This is a slow burner. Lots of dialogue with lots of old school gangster hits peppered in. But it's all engaging with excellent performances. I didn't look at the clock once. I DID kind of feel like I was getting the highlight reel...that there's lots more to this story...but that i got the important parts.

The body count is high, and the hits are brutal. The cars, the hair, and the wardrobe were really well done.

Nasty good time.
